How is crypto staking calculated?
The higher the value of a coin the higher the reward. Typically, the calculation is usually based on the interest likely to be accrued over some time. However, the amount of reward varies from one blockchain network to another.
Rewards are calculated based on the amount of the cryptocurrency you hold in that particular wallet. Meaning, the more you hold of the cryptocurrency, the more Coinbase can stake on your behalf; and the more potential rewards you receive.
The bonded tokens ratio can be simply calculated: bonded tokens divided by total supply. For example, if 800 tokens out of 1000 total tokens are bonded, the bonded tokens ratio would be 80%.
It requires the proper computing equipment and software and downloading a copy of a blockchain's entire transaction history. It can also have a high cost to entry. On the Ethereum network, for example, you'd need to start with at least 32 ETH, which on Jan. 31, 2022, would be worth about $84,000.
The primary benefit of staking is that you earn more crypto, and interest rates can be very generous. In some cases, you can earn more than 10% or 20% per year. It's potentially a very profitable way to invest your money. And, the only thing you need is crypto that uses the proof-of-stake model.
Currently, investors can receive an annualized yield as high as 12.3% by staking their Tether coins. The yield for USD Coin is only slightly lower: around 12%. An investment of $100,000 in either cryptocurrency could easily generate annual passive income of $12,000.
They rarely, rarely provide long term value or returns. Another risk with crypto staking is a fall in value of the underlying asset. For example, if you stake Ethereum at $3,500 per token and while you are staked the value of Ethereum falls to $2,500, then you've lost $1,000 while staking your ETH (on paper).
“The biggest risk is price movement in the crypto you are staking,” says Rajcevic. “So while a 20 percent yield might sound attractive, if the crypto drops 50 percent in price, then you will come out a loser.” The price for earning staking rewards is bearing the cryptocurrency's potential downside.
The benefit is that you can earn around 5% or more on your staked coins. Plus, you're helping the transition to a new, faster, more sustainable Ethereum blockchain. If you were planning to hold ETH and wait out any price drops, you may be comfortable with committing your coins.
The monetary value or reward that investors may earn by making their crypto tokens accessible for loans, taking into consideration the interest rates and any other fees that borrowers must pay, is referred to as the annual percentage rate (APR).
What is APR in staking?
What is APR? Annual Percentage Rate, as the name suggests, is the rate of interest applied on an amount per year. APR tells you how much interest you'll receive at the end of the year on the amount invested.
Coins are locked up in a crypto wallet when staking, meaning they can't trade them in the usual way during this period. However, stakers can grow their wallet value over time, by receiving a percentage return for their staking efforts.
In terms of how staking increases the price. If people lock away tokens it guarantees that tokens are out of the market for a curtain time. So less coins for people to buy, supply goes down, demand stays the same, price goes up. Supply stays the same, demand goes up price increases.
Some predict staking rewards of 7% to 12% post-merge. Other blockchains, like Solana and Cardano, are already running under proof-of-stake. One could earn an estimated reward of 5.8% per year to stake Solana's SOL token, while doing so with Polygon's MATIC could result in an estimated reward of 19.5%.
The Ethereum staking reward rate is variable and changes based on the total amount of ETH staked, with a maximum annual reward rate of 18.10%. Lido applies a 10% fee on staking rewards, split between node operators, the DAO and an insurance fund.

Why is DeFi staking high risk?
DeFi staking is high risk due to the holding period and volatility. Even if you earn a decent amount of interest on your stakings, the price could plummet at any moment, causing you to lose money. It can also take a few days to unstake your crypto and rewards, meaning you can't sell right away.
